Church, Habitat go for seven homes in seven days
Elsa Leonardo thought dream homes were built in a week only on television shows like "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."
But what is reality TV for most is now real life for Leonardo, who is on her way to becoming a first-time homeowner.
"It is amazing. I have only seen it on TV," said Leonardo, standing outside the two-bedroom home on Memory Lane in Carpentersville. "I didn't think this could happen, but it is wonderful. I am so pleased."
Leonardo will share the home with her 28-year-old daughter, Ivette, who has Down syndrome.

The project is a partnership between the Northern Fox Valley Habit for Humanity and Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington as part of its Blitz Build Week.
From June 21 to Saturday, church volunteers have been trying to reach their goal --build seven homes in seven days with 1,700 volunteers in Illinois, Mississippi and Costa Rica.
Those projects include Leonardo's 1,350 square-foot home as well as the rehabilitation of a home in Elgin.
As of Wednesday, the Memory Lane home had walls, roofing and windows. Siding was still needed. Interior fixtures and appliances are expected early next week.
Barbara Beckman, executive director of the Northern Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity, said about 250 volunteers from the church and other organizations would participate during the week.
"We are building a home from start to finish in seven days," Beckman said. "The volunteers are out here from 8 to 6 each day working."
On Tuesday, 30 executives from Schaumburg-based Zurich North America put up drywall, installed insulation and hammered nails.
"It's exciting for Zurich to work on a project that starts with just a bare foundation and in only seven days, we've helped build a 1,350-square-foot home for a deserving family," said Steve Rand, president of Zurich's commercial markets.
Helping others also drew Willow Creek Church member Kate Conerty to the ambitious project.
"It is about giving back," Conerty said. "I am surprised they can get it done in a week, but it is amazing how much you can get done."
Leonardo, who with Ivette now shares a condominium with her niece in Hoffman Estates, said she hopes to move into the home by September.
"It's a dream come true." Leonardo said. "I have always dreamed of owning a home for me and my daughter. I will be more secure about having a home."
