Freight car derails, closes Kane Co. crossings
Four railroad crossings in Kane County were closed Tuesday morning after a freight car derailed and was dragged along the tracks, damaging the crossings, according to the Kane County sheriff's office.
No one was injured.
Two trailers spilled their load of salt. No one had to be evacuated.
Railroad officials are at the scene to check if any additional cargo was spilled.
The last car on an Iowa, Chicago and Eastern Railroad train derailed just after 4 a.m. at a switch behind 38W238 Highland Ave. The train dragged the car about four miles, damaging the railroad crossings.
A problem with the switch might have caused the derailment, according to the railroad's initial investigation.
The crossings at Reinking, Highland, Clark and Thurnau roads, in and around Pingree Grove in northern Kane County, were closed shortly after the incident.
All four crossings were reopened by 11 a.m.
