Elgin man charged in Wing Park stabbings

An Elgin man has been accused of stabbing two Elgin stepbrothers on June 10 on the basketball courts at Wing Park, police said Tuesday.

Shawn D. Baldwin, 39, of 1 Longwood Place, Elgin, has been charged with two counts of aggravated battery with great bodily harm and two counts of battery with a deadly weapon, police said.

Police were called to Wing Park at 5:17 p.m. on June 10, where witnesses said a fistfight had escalated into a stabbing.

Police reports show Patrick Hazley, 19, of 851 Bode Road #6, Elgin, was stabbed in the chest and arm. His stepbrother, Jeremy Edwards, also of Elgin, was stabbed on the chin and had defensive stab/slash wounds on both hands.

Christopher Gilkey, 21, of 301 Kathleen Drive, Elgin, had been slammed to the ground during the fight and his spine was severed, officials said, leaving him with probable paralysis.

Patrick Hazley was arrested on June 11 and was charged with one count of aggravated battery with great bodily harm.

Hazley remains in the Kane County jail with a $4,000 bond.

Elgin police said the fight was not gang-related.

Kane County Judge Susan Clancy Boles set Baldwin's bond at $40,000, and he was remanded to the Kane County jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 9 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
