Hernandez becomes first AL pitcher to hit grand slam in 37 years
One moment, Felix Hernandez was rounding the bases in glee after hitting the first grand slam by an American League pitcher in 37 years.
A few innings later, he was spiking his cap to the ground in frustration after being injured.
Hernandez hit a stunning grand slam off Johan Santana, then departed with a sprained ankle before he could qualify for a win in Seattle's 5-2 victory over the New York Mets on Monday night.
Facing a fellow ace from Venezuela, Hernandez connected off Santana (7-6) with two outs in the second inning to give Seattle a 4-0 lead.
"My approach? Just swing. I closed my eyes," said Hernandez, who figured it was his first home run since Little League. "I was happy and I was thinking that's all I need four runs."
The opposite-field shot to right-center was the first home run by a pitcher in Mariners history, and the first slam by an AL hurler since Cleveland's Steve Dunning went deep against Oakland's Diego Segui on May 11, 1971, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
"He had a pretty good swing," Santana said.
Diamondbacks 2, Red Sox 1: Dan Haren (8-4) was dominant over 7 shutout innings, limiting Boston to just 2 hits and outpitching Josh Beckett in Arizona's win over host Boston.
The Diamondbacks, swept by Minnesota over the weekend, have won just seven of their past 21 road games. Boston dropped to 1-3 on its current six-game homestand after winning 19 of its previous 22 in Fenway Park.
Angels 3, Nationals 2: Garret Anderson's eighth-inning single drove in the go-ahead run, and visiting Los Angeles rallied to beat Washington.
Washington committed a series of errors in the eighth inning that led to a pair of runs, sending the Nats to their sixth loss in seven games.
Royals 8, Rockies 4: Brian Bannister (7-6) picked up his third straight victory, Mark Teahen hit a 3-run homer and host Kansas City beat Colorado for its eighth win in nine games.
The Royals' hot streak has all come against National League clubs, and their 10-3 record is the best in interleague play.

Brewers 4, Braves 1: The opening game of an 11-day road trip didn't bother Ben Sheets (9-1). The Milwaukee Brewers' ace hasn't lost on the road all season.
Sheets gave up only 4 hits in a dominant complete-game performance, Mike Cameron hit a 2-run home run and the Brewers beat Atlanta.
Sheets (9-1) retired the final 16 batters for his National League-leading third complete game. He struck out seven, and did not walk a batter.
Sheets won his fifth straight decision and is 6-0 in 10 road starts.
