Let's not repeat Komosa tragedy

Arlington Heights recently added a football field to the Sunset Meadows Park on Kirchhoff Road. This was a great idea for the park district, except for one thing -- the planning of it. Alongside the football field is a metal fence that stretches the complete length of the park.

What hit me the first time I noticed the unpadded fence was the memory of Rob Komosa and his tragic accident that left him paralyzed.

Now, although Rob ran into an unpadded pole, and the poles at this field are padded, the metal fence still can pose a problem. The fence is but 5 to 10 feet from the field -- enough room to get tackled into it.

I don't think the good people of Arlington Heights, who go to that field to watch their children play football, want to see those same young athletes seriously injured due to the incompetence of the Arlington Heights Park District.

I would encourage the village and the park district to rethink their safety precautions and ensure that no one would be harmed while using that field.
