Dye's getting it done

If the White Sox get swept by the Cubs tonight, don't blame right fielder Jermaine Dye.

In a lineup that's missing Paul Konerko (strained left oblique) and Jim Thome (no designated hitter at Wrigley Field), Dye hit a 2-run homer in the first inning Saturday to give the Sox the early lead.

Dye has hit 4 home runs in his last three games and 6 in his last six games.

"I've been on rolls like this before,'' said Dye, who also extended his hitting streak at Wrigley to 16 games. "You just try not to think about it and go up there and approach every at-bat differently and try to see the ball and hit it hard somewhere.''

Edmonds who? Yes, Jim Edmonds hit 2 home runs in the fourth inning Saturday, 1 off White Sox starter Jose Contreras and 1 off reliever Boone Logan.

No, manager Ozzie Guillen isn't going to think twice about pitching to the veteran center fielder in the future.

"I'm not going to praise a guy hitting .218 (actually .238),'' Guillen said. "Jim's not going to scare me. I'd rather have him out there than (Alfonso) Soriano. He just had a good day.''

Thome to sit: Manager Ozzie Guillen was thinking about playing Jim Thome at first base tonight to give the offense a boost.

But after the Sox scored 7 runs and had 11 hits Saturday, Thome is likely to sit because Guillen doesn't want to risk another back injury.

"I'd rather not take the chance,'' Guillen said. "I don't think we need him right now.''

Too much: If it was up to Ozzie Guillen, the White Sox and the Cubs would play only one interleague series a season.

The rivals are playing three games at Wrigley Field this weekend, then three more at U.S. Cellular Field next weekend.

"I don't like the idea of this series being played at all,'' Guillen said. "They should pick one day. One year we play here, and the next year we play (at U.S. Cellular Field). This is too much. It's fun, but it's too much stuff, too many different things. I don't mind playing, but one week is enough.

"I know I'm not going to change that, and we've got to continue to play them six games, and that's the way it's going to be as long as we play this thing.''

Let's eat: So how did Ozzie Guillen spend his night after Friday's disappointing loss to the Cubs?

He had dinner at Carlos Zambrano's house.

"I don't know what it was, but I ate with him,'' Guillen said of his fellow Venezuelan. "By the way, he's a good cook.''

Minor matters: Aaron Poreda made his second start for Class AA Birmingham on Friday after being promoted from Class A Winston-Salem, where he was 5-5 with a 3.31 ERA.

Poreda, the White Sox' first-round draft choice in 2007, pitched 6 shutout innings for Birmingham, allowing 5 hits while striking out six.
