Northwest Highway back open in Barrington

Rush hour traffic in Barrington should be a bit smoother this afternoon.

Northwest Highway between Route 59 and Lake-Cook Road has reopened now that rail-crossing work on the EJ&E line has wrapped up after four days.

"It's open now," Barrington Public Works Assistant Director Mark Werksman said. "Everything went according to plan.

The crossing, east of Route 59 and north of Lake-Cook Road, closed Monday for what EJ&E spokesman John Armstrong called routine maintenance on the rail line.

Thanks to good weather, Werksman said the work was wrapped up about four hours early.

With 26,000 vehicles crossing over those tracks on a daily basis, traffic was snarled throughout town all week as everyone was rerouted around the work.
