Map exhibit closes early

Chicago's Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies is closing an exhibition on maps of the Holy Land more than two months early after some community members complained it was anti-Israel. "Imaginary Coordinates" opened May 2 and closed Friday, 2½ months early. Spertus President Howard Sulkin says the exhibition "caused pain" for some community members, and trustees say they decided to close the show rather than risk alienating people. A description on the institute's Web site says the show placed maps of the Holy Land next to artworks that "question national borders" as a way to foster conversation.
