Kildeer man again found fit for trial

The Lake County court odyssey involving a Kildeer man accused of molesting four boys in 2005 opens a new chapter next week.

Paul Olsson, 21, has again been found mentally fit to stand trial. He is scheduled to appear in court June 25.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Reginald Matthews said he was notified this week that doctors at the state's Elgin Mental Health Center found Olsson fit for the second time and intend to return him to Lake County.

Olsson was charged with molesting the boys while he worked as a coach at the Lincolnshire Bath and Tennis Club.

He fired his original attorney in January 2007 and since then has battled with judges and attorneys over his right to choose an attorney on his own terms.

In various motions he has filed in the case, Olsson characterizes himself as a victim of a conspiracy involving prosecutors, judges and defense attorneys.

He is currently represented by the county's public defender office but has refused to meet with attorneys to discuss a defense.

Olsson was originally found unfit for trial in October 2007 after an examination by a court-appointed psychologist.

He was sent to the hospital in Elgin, and doctors there issued a report that Olsson had been restored to fitness after just 46 days there.

Assistant Public Defender Keith Grant challenged the Elgin staff's finding, and Olsson was again declared unfit after a jury trial in March.

Grant declined to say if he will again challenge the Elgin staff's decision.

Olsson will return to Lake County and be held in custody until officials decide how to proceed in the case, Matthews said.

If convicted of the multiple counts of criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse against him, Olsson could be sentenced to up to 60 years in prison.
