Commuter hurt by gate

A freak accident on a Metra commuter train heading to Chicago from the South suburbs left a woman injured. A dislodged crossing gate became wedged between the steel doors of the train during the Thursday morning rush. The woman, who was standing in the vestibule in the center of a passenger car, was hit by the door as it crumpled. According to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Kevin MacGregor, the woman, who was not identified, was taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Metra spokeswoman Judy Pardonnet says it appears the crossing gate was out of position due to something -- possibly a car -- striking the mechanism that operates it.
