Man on probation for DUI charged again after he hits officer's car

A 20-year-old Elgin man on probation for drunken driving was drunk again Wednesday when he crashed into a car driven by an Elgin community service officer, police said.

Raymond A. Grant of 10N374 Muirhead Road was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and consumption of alcohol by a minor, police said.

Grant also was cited for no driver's license on his person, failure to give aid at an accident, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and illegal overtaking on the left, police said.

Grant was traveling west at 11:35 p.m. Wednesday on Bowes Road at Alberta Road in Elgin when he attempted to pass two vehicles ahead of him, police said.

Grant's 1995 Nissan rammed one of those cars, driven by Brian Zweig, an Elgin community service officer, when it turned left in front of him, police said.

Grant fled on foot from the scene and was caught nearby on the 40W800 block of Bowes Road with the help of a dog unit, police said.

Elgin police said they weren't sure if Zweig was on duty at the time of the accident.

Zweig was treated at a local hospital for a cut on his right thigh, a cut on his head and a concussion.

Grant was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital with an eye laceration.

A test at the hospital showed his blood-alcohol concentration level was 0.093 percent.

Grant was unable to post a $4,000 bond and was taken to the Kane County jail to await a June 27 Kane County Judicial Center court date.
