Hoffman Estates standoff ends after 5½ hours

A 25-year-old Hoffman Estates man armed with a BB gun was involved in a standoff with police that lasted more than five hours early Thursday, authorities said.

Robert Cooksey surrendered to police around 6 a.m., police said. No one was hurt. Cooksey was charged with aggravated assault after police arrested him outside a house on the 600 block of Randi Lane, police said.

Police arrived around 12:30 a.m. in response to reports of a disturbance. They found Cooksey outside, holding the realistic-looking BB gun, Sgt. Gregory Poulos said. Upon the officers' arrival, Cooksey retreated inside, police said.

The Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Emergency Service Team assisted at the scene and blasted loud booming sounds at the home to entice Cooksey to give himself up, Poulos said.

Cooksey's next court date is slated for July 14.
