Man who shot officer up for parole

In the 32 years since Chicago police Officer Terrence Loftus was shot to death while trying to break up a gang fight the pain of his loss hasn't diminished for family members and friends.

So it wasn't surprising that about a dozen people went before the state's Prison Review Board to speak against the release of Ronnie Carrasquillo. He was sentenced to 200 to 600 years in prison for the October 1976 shooting of Loftus.

Those speaking against his release say Carrasquillo has shown no remorse and granting him freedom would empower others to act violently against police.

Assistant State's Attorney Gina Savini, who also argued against Carrasquillo's release, said Carrasquillo was angry at Loftus for interfering with gang activity in the neighborhood.

Supporters of the 50-year-old Carrasquillo say he's a model inmate and deserves a second chance.
