Glitch fixed; Relay online

A computer glitch hampered would-be participants wanting to sign up for the Hoffman Estates Relay For Life.

According to Linda Scheck, the village's new tourism and business retention coordinator, those wanting to run in the Hoffman Estates relay would go online and be mistakenly redirected to the Web sites touting the Schaumburg and Roselle relays.

The bug has been fixed, and those wanting to register can point their browsers to www.relayforlifehoffman.com. For those wanting to participate, the event is from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. July 18 at Hoffman Estates High School. It will feature food, live music, a DJ with karaoke, bean bags competition and other fun. The event is once again organized by the community chair Bob Swan.

Monday night, the American Cancer Society also presented the Hoffman Estates village board with a sign declaring the village as a Relay For Life community.

Summer sounds start today: Today marks opening night for the Hoffman Estates Arts Commission's Summer Sounds on the Green.

Arts commission members select the bands by listening to MP3 and CD music samples. They concerts are a familiar sight on summer Thursdays.

Today's show features the Alan Gresik Swing Shift Orchestra. Different performers play weekly through Aug. 7 at the Virginia Mary Hayter Village Green on Prairie Stone Parkway off Route 72 in the Prairie Stone Business Park. The shows have gained popularity for inexpensive - i.e. free - family entertainment.

Next year, the village will likely welcome the Prairie Creek Amphitheater to Prairie Stone Business Park. The venue will host a variety of big-name acts, trying to evoke memories of the shuttered Poplar Creek Music Theater. Don't count on any of these tickets to be free, as concerts tickets have risen in price through the years.

Now, there's no reason to believe that the arts commission's shows will be affected by Prairie Creek's concerts, but next year the Summer Sounds won't be the only show in town. And that's worth noting.
