Shameful denial of a deserved tribute

Five years have passed, but shame on Bensenville Village President John Geils and the village of Bensenville still exists.

Sgt. Richard W. Mosher, a retired former deputy chief officer, died June 9, 2003. After serving 27 years he was denied an honor guard traditionally given to police officers upon their death. The reason was based on a scandal and charge that was never proven. President John Geils disgraced the village of Bensenville and has shown what little respect he has for his police department.

As we recently observed Memorial Day, may I remind Bensenville President John Geils that Sgt. Richard W. Mosher proudly served his country in Vietnam and today his name is etched in stone at the VFW Veterans Memorial in Wood Dale. Daily an American flag flies overhead to honor him for his service to his country. However, his service of 27 years that he performed as a police officer for the village of Bensenville was not appreciated or recognized since the village and President John Geils denied him an honor guard.

Sgt. Richard W. Mosher, may you rest in peace knowing your family, friends and police officers will never forget you and the shameful decision made by the village of Bensenville and President John Geils.
