Sex abuse suspect sought in Libertyville

Libertyville police are seeking a man suspected in an attack on a 25-year-old woman while she jogged along a village street.

Police Chief Pat Carey said the reported criminal sexual abuse occurred about 3:40 p.m. June 11 on Greentree Parkway where it dead-ends at Dawes Street.

"It's unusual in that it is a very public area," Carey said Tuesday. "It's not a secluded place in the woods."

Carey said investigators don't believe the suspect specifically targeted the residential area at Greentree and Dawes on Libertyville's far south end.

Police reports provided the following account of the attack:

After beginning her run at XSport Fitness, 1163 N. Milwaukee Ave., the Mundelein woman went south and turned west on Greentree.

When she reached Greentree and Dawes, the suspect approached her from behind and pulled down her shorts. The man fled after she screamed.

Police were called after a woman who lives in the area drove past the victim, Carey said. The woman then drove the victim, who was not injured, back to XSport Fitness, he said.

The Vernon Hills police dog was summoned for what turned out to be an unsuccessful attempt to find the suspect.

Carey said a resident playing with his daughter at Greentree Park saw a man, believed to have been the suspect, walk past him after the attack. He said the resident didn't provide enough details about the suspect's appearance for a police composite sketch.

Libertyville investigators are seeking possible images of the attacker by examining video shot by cameras at businesses near Milwaukee and Greentree, Carey said. Authorities also are working with XSport Fitness to review video on the chance the suspect has visited the facility.

In addition, police have been combing lists of registered sex offenders and other databases for potential suspects.

Carey said the woman didn't get a view of her attacker.
