Ask your senator to support this bill
Senate Joint Resolution 13 (SJR13) (Property Tax Assessment Freeze) allows for property tax relief while allowing a constant revenue flow to fund state, city and county operations. This resolution calls for freezing property tax assessments for all real property owners until that property is sold to another individual.
In short, this resolution limits property taxes to 2 percent of fair market value and limits annual increases in property assessments to either 2 percent or the rate of inflation, whichever is less.
This resolution is similar to Proposition 13 that was enacted into law in California. That was 26 years ago and is still in place today. At the time, state government predicted passage of this proposition would cause the state, to basically fall into the Pacific.
Having lived in California, Texas and Michigan because of work assignments, I saw firsthand how Proposition 13 helped residents of California stay in their homes and not have to move because of ever increasing property taxes.
SJR13 currently has only 12 out of 59 state senators on board for passage in the Illinois Senate. Each of us needs to contact their senator and ask them to support this.
