Wetland grant awarded
The DuPage County Forest Preserve is receiving a grant from the Army Corps of Engineers and The Conservation Fund for wetland and prairie restoration at Glen Ellyn's Churchill Woods Forest Preserve. The grant is part of the Northeastern Illinois Wetlands Conservation Account. The Churchill Woods grant is for $33,000, DuPage officials said. It will go toward 13 acres of wet and upland prairie at the 60-acre forest preserve. McHenry County Conservation District, Kane County Forest Preserve District, Chicago Park District and Schaumburg Park District were among the other entities receiving grants.
Small fire at Lombard store
A small fire last week caused about $3,000 damage to a dressing room in a department store at Yorktown Shopping Center in Lombard, authorities said Monday. The Wednesday fire in a dressing room at Von Maur was discovered by a store employee. Another employee used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames. Lombard fire officials said the blaze appears to be the result of ignited clothing material. An investigation is ongoing.
Community input meetings
Residents living within the Carol Stream Park District boundaries are invited to participate in three upcoming public input meetings being held to help the district set direction for the short- and long-term future. The hourlong meetings will be held 7 p.m. today at the Simkus Recreation Center, and on both Thursday and June 24 at the Aldrin Community Center. This is the second step in gathering community input on the district's existing and future recreation needs. The Simkus Recreation Center is at 849 Lies Road in Carol Stream. Lower tuition at Elmhurst
Elmhurst College will offer a new pricing structure and lower tuition for graduate students beginning their studies this fall. The lowered rates will be available in each of the nine graduate programs available at the school, including computer information systems, nursing and business administration.
