Buffalo Grove police, dealership look for car vandals

A car dealership and police are searching for the vandals that caused almost $80,000 in damage to more than 50 vehicles last month in Buffalo Grove.

The vandalism was reported May 31 and is suspected to have occurred overnight at the Metra train station where the cars were being stored.

Arlington Toyota, 935 W. Dundee Road, has an agreement with Buffalo Grove to store up to 225 cars at the commuter lot on Commerce Court.

That night, about 80 vehicles were parked in the lot, and 55 were found with scratches or broken windows.

"We did have an accident there last year when someone had thrown rocks from the railroad tracks," said Scott Vicari, vice president of Arlington Toyota. "But that was nowhere near the severity of what happened this time."

Buffalo Grove Cmdr. Steve Husak said there haven't been any similar incidents at the train station recently.

He said the police are going to work with Lake County Crime Stoppers to come up with a reward for any information leading to an arrest of the vandals. Vicari said Arlington Toyota will also add to that reward.

"(The dealership) is going to be out a significant amount of money," Husak said. "Depending on the damage when they go to re-sell the cars, they have to disclose repairs to the new owner. That may affect price negotiations."

Anyone with information on the vandalism can call Buffalo Grove police at (847) 459-2560.
