$1 million bond in Des Plaines stabbing death

While his fellow Maine West graduates enjoy their summer unfettered, 17-year-old Ashuri Hidou of Des Plaines will likely spend his in jail.

At a bond hearing Monday in Skokie, Judge Timothy J. Chambers set bond at $1 million for Hidou, accused of first-degree murder in the Saturday stabbing death of 21-year-old Israel Moreno, also from Des Plaines.

According to court records, the dispute between Hidou and Moreno began early Saturday, when Moreno began yelling for a woman inside a residence on the 400 block of Laurel Avenue in Des Plaines.

Getting no response, Moreno walked north on Laurel Avenue. According to authorities, Hidou left the house armed with an 8-inch blade, encountered Moreno about 2:15 a.m., and a struggle ensued. Prosecutors allege Hidou stabbed Moreno, who was unarmed. Police recovered a knife at the scene. Witnesses separated the two men, the court records state, as Moreno staggered a few steps and fell to the ground.

Prosecutors said Hidou ran to a nearby apartment, cleaned his hands and called a cousin, who drove him to Swedish Covenant Hospital on Chicago's North Side for treatment of injuries to his face, hand and arms. Authorities said Hidou supplied a false name and address to the hospital and claimed he was beaten. The hospital called the Chicago Police Department, and Hidou fled to Lincolnwood, where Des Plaines police apprehended him Sunday.

Police said Hidou gave a videotaped statement describing the encounter with Moreno.

Defense attorney David Carrabotta, a longtime friend of the Hidou family, said Hidou has no criminal record and no gang ties. Police described Moreno as a known gang member, although family members disputed that.

The next hearing is 1:30 p.m. Friday at Skokie courthouse.
