St. Louis defeats Machine in OT
ST. LOUIS, MO. - The Chicago Machine suffered a 12-11 overtime loss to the Barrage Saturday night, dropping its record to 1-4 in Major League Lacrosse.
With its second overtime loss in two weeks, the Machine drops to last place of the Western Conference, and the Barrage improves to 3-2 in the Eastern Conference.
Attackman Mike Leveille led all the Machine players with 4 goals, while Brian Clayton added 3 goals in the loss. Barrage attackman Seth Goldberg led St. Louis with 3 goals and 1 assist as Matt Striebel also had 3 goals.
The Barrage opened the gates by jumping ahead after Striebel and Michael Springer scored to lead 2-0, before midfielder Steven Brooks netted the first goal to put the Machine on the board. However, that didn't slow the Barrage down as they surged ahead with two more goals to take the lead 4-1.
Machine attackman Kevin Leveille scored later into the first quarter to cut the lead in half. The Barrage countered and scored once more by Goldberg before the end of the first quarter to extend the lead 5-2.
Both teams then opened the second quarter with more firepower and traded a pair of goals until the Machine fired up their engines with less than five minutes remaining to tie the game at six goals apiece. Jake Deane slipped one by the Barrage goaltender Brian Doughtery, as Clayton added two more goals to catch up with the Barrage.
The Barrage's own, Roy Colsey opened the second half adding a powerplay goal to the Barrage's scoreboard, breaking the tie and taking the lead once again. The battle continued with both teams finding the back of the net three times into the fourth quarter. Chicago finally took command after Clayton took a feed from Brooks and scored his third goal of the game. Two minutes later, Leveille added his fourth goal to extend the lead 11-9 for the Machine.
Just when the two point lead was safe, the Barrage evened up the board after Springer and Colsey marked their second goal to tie the game and force it into overtime.
Goldberg took a feed from Ryan Boyle and scored at the 1:42 mark into the extra period to give the Barrage their third win of the season.
Barrage goalie Brian Doughtery was named the player of the game after stopping 18 out of 29 shots on goal.
