Fireworks, parade and music in Elgin

So you've got fireworks and a parade on your docket for July 4.

Why not add a concert?

Elgin's Downtown Neighborhood Association will host "Honest Abe's Rockin' Blues Concert" at the city hall parking lot, 150 Dexter Court, immediately following the July 4 parade.

The Blooze Brothers, AC Rock and the Midway Ramblers Cajun Band are all slated to play, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Many downtown restaurants and shops will be open and offering good deals and specials.

As for the parade, it will step off at 9 a.m. from Slade and Douglas avenues and will end at Highland and Douglas avenues.

The parade will last nearly two hours with an estimated 15,000 spectators. The parade will also feature more 200 participants.

@Leadin for body copy:Raffle for a cause: Mark your calendar for a drawdown raffle to benefit an autism center. The South Elgin Lions Club will host the event July 11 at 500 Fulton St., South Elgin.

The doors open at 6 p.m. and the raffle begins at 7 p.m. with a dance following the raffle.

Half of the proceeds will benefit the Alexander Leigh Center for Autism in Lake in the Hills.

The cost is $20 per person includes raffle, dinner and dance. For dinner and dance only, its $10 per person and a cash bar will be available.

In a draw down raffle, multiple drawings are held for a variety of prizes.

Among them are:

Emily Smith, of Elgin, the District Vocational Scholarship, $1,500.

Felicia Stanford, of Aurora; David Ossewaarde, of Elgin; Michelle Charron, of West Dundee; Salvador Porras of Streamwood; and Frank Sherwood, of Elgin, all received the Vocational Scholarship of varying amounts.

Liliana Candela, of Elgin; Hollis Sadoff, of Streamwood; Stephanie Flood, of Lake in the Hills; Michael MacDonald, of St. Charles; Matthew Meier, of East Dundee; received the Northern Illinois University "Transfer Scholarship" of $1,000 for each student.

@Leadin for body copy:Summer fun suggestion: This sounds like a neat little trick.

A magic class kids ages 5 to 12 will be held from 5:15 p.m. to 6:10 p.m. June 24 at the Centre, 100 Symphony Way.

Participants will learn a collection of tricks, all materials will be provided, and each child will receive magic tricks to take home.

The cost is $18 for residents and $21 for nonresidents. The maximum the class can hold is 35 kids, but the high mark has been 17 so far.
