Reds handle Red Sox -- again
Jay Bruce and Adam Dunn hit solo homers, and Aaron Harang got his first victory in a month, leading the host Cincinnati Reds to a 3-1 interleague victory over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.
The Red Sox were in Cincinnati for the first time since the 1975 World Series, when the Reds took two of three at Riverfront Stadium. The Big Red Machine went back to Fenway Park, overcame Carlton Fisk's dramatic wave-it-fair homer that ended Game 6, and won the Series in seven games.
Harang (3-9) hadn't won since May 12, losing his last 4 starts.
Boston's Manny Ramirez singled home a run in the fourth. He left the game in the seventh with a sore hamstring.
Twins 10, Brewers 2: Kevin Slowey pitched 8 effective innings and hit a 2-run single to lead Minnesota past host Milwaukee.
Justin Morneau and Alexi Casilla both had 3 RBI for the Twins, who are trying to salvage the final series of a miserable road trip. Minnesota began the swing 1-6 and had given up 10 runs or more in four of the first seven games.
Orioles 9, Pirates 6: Luke Scott homered, and Melvin Mora had 3 hits and a key RBI for host Baltimore, which rallied from a 5-run deficit to beat the Pirates.
Pittsburgh got a 3 -run homer from Jason Michaels in building a 6-1 lead in the third against Brian Burres (5-5).
Mets 7, Rangers 1: Oliver Perez pitched 7 stellar innings and drove in 2 runs to help New York past visiting Texas, giving embattled manager Willie Randolph a reprieve in a clubhouse desperate for good news.
Marlon Anderson snapped an 0-for-25 slump with a single and had 2 RBI for the Mets.
Josh Hamilton homered and had 2 hits for the Rangers, but the best hitting club in the American League managed just 1 other hit in its first game against the Mets at Shea Stadium.
Rays 7, Marlins 3: Eric Hinske and Dioner Navarro both drove in 2 runs to lead host Tampa Bay past Florida.
Hinske's first-inning double off Ryan Tucker (1-1) wiped out a 2-run lead the Marlins took against Andy Sonnanstine (7-3), who settled down after a shaky opening inning to win for the first time in nearly a month.
Tigers 5, Dodgers 0: Armando Galarraga and Freddy Dolsi combined on a 3-hitter, and Marcus Thames and Magglio Ordonez homered for host Detroit in its fourth straight win.
The Dodgers lost for the third straight time. They have a .138 average (13-for-94) in those games, and have scored 1 run.
Yankees 2, Astros 1: Derek Jeter hit a solo homer in the eighth inning off Doug Brocail, and Joba Chamberlain pitched 6 strong innings in his first career road start to lead visiting New York past Houston.
Alex Rodriguez added an RBI single for the Yankees in their first regular-season game at Minute Maid Park.
Chamberlain allowed 6 hits and struck out two in his third career start.
Phillies 20, Cardinals 2: Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell hit consecutive home runs in the first inning, and Philadelphia was just getting warmed up in a 20-2 rout of host St. Louis.
Kyle Kendrick (6-2) worked 7 strong innings and contributed 2 hits and an RBI, including his first career extra-base hit, to a season-best 9-run fourth as part of a 21-hit onslaught.
The 20 runs tied the major-league high for the season, set by the Phillies on May 26 at home against the Rockies.
