Garden club to bring in floral experts

Ooh and aah over floral displays, learn from gardening experts, tour a beautiful house and enjoy tea Saturday at the Floral Displays and Home Tour: Sharing Geneva's Charm.

"This is the first time we've had (a show) in a long, long time," said club President Betty Hassels. The past 10 or so years, the club has had garden walks, involving multiple sites, every other year.

"We decided to try. If it works out, we may have it every other year."

Club member Catherine Rex is opening her home at 402 S. Sixth St., in the city's historic district. All the cut-flower displays are being made by club members. There also will be a plant sale and a garden items boutique.

"It's going to be lovely," Hassels said.

The show is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Half-hour presentations by experts start at 11:30 a.m.:

• 11:30 a.m. -- Bloomin' Fun by Barbara Bates, master gardener educator, University of Illinois Extension Service;

• 12:15 p.m. -- Herb and Edible Flowers by Craig and Annette MacLean of the Pure Gardener;

• 1 p.m. -- No More Pink Flamingos by Shirley Remes, field editor for Better Homes and Gardens;

• 1:45 p.m. -- Bloomin' Fun by Bates;

• 2:30 p.m. -- Flowers As an Art Form by James Peabody, florist;

• 3:15 p.m. -- Herb and Edible Flowers by the MacLeans;

• 4 p.m. -- Pretty Posies by Nancy Hollmeier and Margy Walkington of GardenWorks.

Tickets are $20 and may be bought at the door or in advance at Betty's Garden Party, 212 S. Third St., the Geneva History Center, 113 S. Third St., and the Pure Gardener, 502 W. State St.

All proceeds go to the club's college scholarship fund.
