Another blown save for Wagner in Mets' loss
Billy Wagner's big slump has come at a terrible time for the New York Mets.
The beleaguered closer coughed up his third consecutive save chance, this time wasting a splendid pitching performance by Johan Santana and allowing the Arizona Diamondbacks to rally past host New York 5-4 in 10 innings Thursday.
"It's frustrating," Wagner said. "I stink right now."
Justin Upton doubled leading off the 10th against Aaron Heilman (0-3) and scored on Miguel Montero's sacrifice fly to help the Diamondbacks take two of three in the series.
Third baseman Augie Ojeda and shortstop Stephen Drew made diving plays in the bottom of the ninth to keep the score tied.
"We showed some tenacity all three games here, which was big for me," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "We haven't really showed a propensity to come back much this year in the fashion that we did last year."
After Santana struck out 10 in 7 shutout innings, Wagner squandered a 2-run lead in the ninth and screamed at himself several times while walking back to the dugout.
The left-hander also gave up a go-ahead homer to San Diego pinch hitter Tony Clark in Sunday's 8-6 loss and a tying, 3-run shot to Mark Reynolds on Wednesday night. The Mets recovered to win that one on Carlos Beltran's 13th-inning homer, ending a five-game skid.
"It's really not the team right now -- it's all on me," Wagner said. "I'm not getting the job done."
Padres 9, Dodgers 0: Jake Peavy made a triumphant return with 6 strong innings, and host San Diego scored 5 first-inning runs in a win over Los Angeles. Peavy (5-3) combined with three relievers on a 5-hitter in his first start in nearly a month since being sidelined by a strained right elbow.
Brewers 9, Astros 6: Ben Sheets struck out a season-high nine, Mike Cameron and Corey Hart homered for the second straight game, and Milwaukee beat host Houston to take two of three in the series. Prince Fielder and Gabe Kapler also homered for the Brewers, who've won five of their last seven series.
Pirates 7, Nationals 5: Ryan Doumit finished an outstanding series against Washington, hitting another home run in host Pittsburgh's victory. In the three-game series, the Pirates catcher went 9-for-11 with 4 home runs, 2 doubles and 7 RBI to help the Pirates win two of three.
Giants 10, Rockies 7: Fred Lewis hit a 3-run homer, Ray Durham picked up his 2,000th career hit, and San Francisco beat host Colorado to avoid being swept. Jonathan Sanchez (6-3) pitched 5 shaky innings for his fourth straight win.
Reds 6, Cardinals 2: Brandon Phillips hit a 3-run triple in the Reds' 4-run seventh. Cincinnati loaded the bases against relievers Mark Worrell (0-1) and Randy Flores with two outs in the seventh. Ken Griffey Jr. walked to force in the go-ahead run and Phillips followed with a drive down the right-field line.
Phillies 3, Marlins 0: Jamie Moyer (7-3) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, and Philadelphia scored 2 runs off a wild pitch on the way to avoiding a three-game sweep. Chase Utley, Pat Burrell, Jimmy Rollins and Pedro Feliz all had 2 hits for the first-place Phillies, who moved 3 games ahead of the Marlins in the NL East.

Royals 6, Rangers 5: Alex Gordon and Mike Aviles each hit a 2-run homer, and host Kansas City beat Texas to avoid a three-game sweep. The Rangers led 5-4 before Kansas City pushed across 2 runs in the eighth. Pinch runner Tony Pena Jr. scampered home on Frank Francisco's wild pitch, and Gordon scored on Jose Guillen's sacrifice fly to give the Royals the lead.
Red Sox 9, Orioles 2: Mike Lowell hit his second grand slam of the season, a streaking J.D. Drew hit a 2-run shot, and Boston kept rolling at home, beating Baltimore. The Red Sox are 18-3 in their last 21 games at Fenway Park. Their 28-7 home record is the best in the majors, but their 14-20 mark away from home is the worst of the six division leaders.
Indians 12, Twins 2: Ben Francisco and Jamey Carroll had 4 hits apiece to lead injury-depleted Cleveland over visiting Minnesota. Even with five key players from last year's AL Central champion team on the disabled list, the Indians had 18 hits including homers by Shin-Soo Choo and Grady Sizemore off Livan Hernandez (6-4) and four relievers.
