Woman OK after train hits her car
A 57-year-old woman is in good condition after a slow-moving, inbound Metra train struck her car around 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Palatine.
The collision occurred at the South Hicks Road crossing just west of the Union Pacific Northwest line's Arlington Park stop.
Authorities said the woman was making a right turn from Route 14 onto South Hicks when the crossing gates activated and came down on her 2000 Honda Accord.
Not realizing her car was in the train's path, she opted to wait until it passed before moving, said Palatine police Cmdr. Kurt Schroeder.
The engineer saw the car from about half a mile away and began to stop. The train had slowed to 5 mph when it hit the car, said Schroeder.
The woman was cited for failure to obey a signal indicating an approaching train.
The train was about 35 minutes behind schedule pulling into Ogilvie Transportation Center in downtown Chicago, said Metra spokesman Tom Miller.
No other delays were reported.
