Teens arrested after shots fired in Wheeling
Three teenagers were arrested in Wheeling after a gang-related shooting late Monday afternoon that occurred in the vicinity of a 1½-year-old child. No one was injured in the incident.
Jobanie Rodriguez, 19, of 842 E. Colonial Drive, Wheeling, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, endangering the life of a child, felony mob action and no firearm owner's identification card, police said.
A 15-year-old was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and mob action, and a 16-year-old was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and mob action, police said.
At 4:25 p.m. Monday, Wheeling officers were called to 1455 Lake-Cook Road. Officers were told that the car thought to be part of the shooting was being followed south on McHenry Road by the victims.
A man matching a description of the shooter was seen running south in the area of McHenry Road and Colonial Drive, police said. After a foot pursuit, Rodriguez was taken into custody.
The two juveniles, who police said they later found were the driver and a passenger in the 2001 Ford Escape involved in the shooting, were also taken into custody after a foot chase, police said.
The 15-year-old was seen throwing away a .22-caliber gun, which was later recovered, police said.
The car was found on Colonial Drive, and police found that Rodriguez's 1½-year old daughter was in the back seat.
Rodriguez, who police said admitted to being a gang member, thought he saw two opposing gang members in the other car, police said. He left his car and shot a bullet at the other vehicle, police said.
The 17-year-old driver and 20-year-old passenger in the other car were not the ones he was looking for, police said.
Rodriguez's bond was set at $80,000 Monday, and he has a July 8 court date in Rolling Meadows.
