His daughter, Monique, tells the Chicago Sun-Times that he died Monday night of a blocked artery at his home in suburban Harvey.
Former coach Joey Meyer called Watkins the secret weapon on a Final Four team that featured Mark Aguirre and Clyde Bradshaw.
Watkins scored 24 points in DePaul's 1979 victory over UCLA that sent the Blue Demons to the Final Four. He ranks 10th on the school's all-time scoring list and ninth in rebounds.
Meyer called Watkins a coach's dream because of his ability to score and his defensive prowess.
