Wheeling wrapping up loose ends for village hall

The Wheeling village board on Monday took care of some odds and ends related to the construction of the new village hall.

Among other items, the board settled on a contract to move a pile of sand that had accumulated after the removal of the old public works building.

"It does need to be specially disposed of," said Jon Sfondilis, assistant village manager.

The removal is also part of the agreement that the village has with the park district that goes back to a land swap that allowed the construction of the village hall.

The park district received 8 acres of land that formerly housed the public works building in that deal. The village received 6 acres of land from the park district to build the new hall at 301 W. Dundee Road, adjacent to the current one at 255 W. Dundee Road.

The village hall is expected to be complete by next year.

The board also discussed landscaping and irrigation at the new building as well as the tiles that will be used near the new village board meeting room.

The staff also brought forward plans for the new public works building, which is being built at 77 W. Hintz Road.

The ideas for that building will go to the plan commission and then come back to the village board for final approval.

Trustee Ken Brady said he was happy with the loading docks, the fuel island that will service all village vehicles and the room for expansion at the new site.

"There's certainly going to be enough stuff to store out there," he said.

The new building, besides having the capacity to expand outward, will also have room to build a new second floor if necessary. The plans include a pit for an elevator and will have the frame up for the second floor.

If that area becomes necessary, concrete will have to be poured in, but the other amenities for the building -- such as windows on the second floor -- will already be in place.
