Plainfield worker guilty of stealing Argonne equipment
A former Argonne National Laboratory employee has pleaded guilty to charges he stole metal equipment from the federal facility to feed a drug habit.
Jay Goatley of Plainfield worked at Argonne for 17 years. He faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced July 21 by DuPage County Circuit Judge Robert Anderson.
Goatley was charged in December with stealing 37 feet of copper wire, a 3-foot stainless-steel tub, two stainless-steel gas cylinder gauges, two lead bricks and a 5-foot experimental line apparatus, valued about $10,000. Prosecutors say most of the material has been recovered.
Goatley is free on bail and has applied for substance-abuse treatment as part of his penalty.
