Travel section wins awards
Going Places, the Daily Herald's Sunday travel section, took home eight awards in writing and photography contests sponsored by the Society of American Travel Writers' Central States chapter.
The section, edited by Kathy Rodeghier, received first place for newspaper travel sections with a circulation of less than 350,000. In the writing contest, Rodeghier won first place in the series category for a pair of articles on Egypt and first place for an article describing a behind-the-scenes tour at Walt Disney World. Rodeghier won third place in the self-illustrated category for an article and photos on a barge cruise in France and third place for a photo of a sculpture and museum in Milwaukee.
Awards also were given to free-lance writers for work that appeared in the Daily Herald's travel section. Mike Michaelson took a second-place award for an article on Woodstock, Ill., Susan Bayer Ward won first place for an article on Easter Island and Lori Erickson won the best ecology/preservation award for an article on Costa Rica.
The Central States chapter of the Society of American Travel Writers covers the nation's midsection between the Canadian and Mexican borders. Awards were announced May 16 in Rapid City, S.D., during the chapter's annual meeting.
