Right decision to protect the trees

At a special meeting Tuesday, the Glen Ellyn Park District Board changed its previously steadfast decision to destroy 340 full-grown, native trees in Ackerman Woods in order to install two soccer fields, one of which would double as a rain water detention pond.

We commend the park district president and commissioners for their change of heart. Their paying credence to the well-organized outcry from concerned Glen Ellyn citizens reflects the seriousness and respect with which these officials regard their responsibility to the Glen Ellyn community. Their ability to step back from their original position, to consider the ecological implications of that plan, and to acknowledge that there can and should be a better solution for our village displays their courage and their dedication to their job and to the welfare of Glen Ellyn.
