Board approves Wheeling Station for Town Center

After years of delay, the Wheeling Station project has won approval to be built, kicking off a portion of the Town Center village officials have wanted near the train station.

The condominium and retail project will go up at the northwest corner of Dundee Road and Northgate Parkway.

The plans, which were first presented in November of 2006, include 180 residential units and 22,000 square feet of commercial use.

Developer John Mitola said the first building, near the front of the property, will have 36 condominiums and retail. The two back buildings will have 72 condos each with parking, and the final building will feature a bank.

At the village board meeting Monday where the project was approved, Trustee Robert Heer said the development will be a good addition to Wheeling if it's pulled off in the way it's proposed.

He said he had some concerns about getting good retail into the site that will attract residents.

"If you have very successful tenants, people will go there," he said.

Village Manager Mark Rooney said the plans have been held up because of storm-water issues on the site, which still have to be worked out.

However, he said the project, when it's completed, will go along with the high-density, transit-oriented use that the village wants for the area.

Rooney said it will also complement future projects, such as the residential and retail mix that the comprehensive plan dictates for the Wickes site adjacent to village hall.
