Fast moving storm causes scattered outages in Lake, McHenry counties
A line of strong thunderstorms with gusty winds clipped McHenry and northern Lake counties, and southern Wisconsin this morning, downing limbs and causing scattered power outages.
About 3,000 customers throughout Lake County were without power about 10:45 a.m. Overall, about 6,400 homes in ComEd's system of 3.8 million customers were affected.
Crews were working throughout the service territory to restore power as quickly as possible, said Joe Trost, a ComEd spokesman. There was no timetable for the power to be restored.
"It was a line of strong winds, not terribly unusual," said Andrew Krein, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. The system moved through quickly at 60 to 70 mph, he said. Sustained winds of 60 mph were reported at Rockford.
"For the rest of today, everything should be pretty quiet," Krein said. There is a better chance of more severe weather Friday.
"There's a system really gathering strength over the Central Plains," he said. "It's going to impact this area tomorrow afternoon and evening."
