Term limits are needed, not recall
This is in response to state Sen. Dan Cronin's letter on a recall law for Illinois. Apparently, Cronin does not know that we have recall - it's called an election. What we need are term limits. Three, two-year terms for the House of Representatives and six years for the Senate. And when their terms end, all benefits terminate, and lawmakers do not get lifetime pensions.
Cronin said some Democrats denied voters their right to consider a recall amendment. The voters have a right to consider term limits. Will Cronin propose a constitutional amendment for term limits for the Nov. 3 elections? I highly doubt it.
For real reform we should abolish both the U.S. Senate and state Senate. These are superfluous entities. We can get all the representation we need from our representatives. And all of the functions performed by Senate can be done by the House of Representatives.
Cronin must not have enough to do. He sure wasted a lot of time and taxpayer money with his effort to get a recall amendment primarily because of his dislike for our governor. Maybe it's time for Cronin to retire if he cannot work with the governor and fellow legislators that he thinks are corrupt.
With term limits, by the time elected officials become corrupt, their terms will be over.
So will Cronin and other lawmakers who want a recall amendment deny voters their right to consider term limits? Probably, because they are career politicians.
