Seniors celebrate in Lake County
The Barrington Area Council on Aging and the Barrington Park District will provide area seniors free transportation to the Lake County Forest Preserves' annual Seniors Day Celebration June 11 in Libertyville. The event will feature free pontoon boat rides, sponsor exhibits, health screenings, bingo, horseshoes, swimming and native garden tours at Independence Grove Forest Preserve. Bring your own lunch. A bus will leave Langendorf Park at 9 a.m. and return around 2:30 p.m. To register, call Linda Avellon at (847) 852-3892.
Birchwood to host pool party for teens
The Palatine Park District will host a teen pool party from 8 to 10 p.m. June 13 at Birchwood Pool, 435 W. Illinois Ave.
The event, which is open to ages 12 to 16, will include swimming, music, food and giveaways. The cost is $5 in advance and $8 at the door. Call the park district at (847) 991-0333.
Support Hanover Township troops
On June 13 and 14 the Hanover Township clerks office will host its fourth annual 24-Hour Support Our Troops Marathon beginning at 4 p.m. with a reception to honor Hanover Township Honor Roll Veterans.
The marathon is designed to encourage people to come out to the township grounds, 250 S. Route 59, Bartlett, and donate items that will go into care packages to be delivered to troops serving in combat areas.
A classic car show with DJ Tony Adelfio will be held from 5-10 p.m. June 13. Those interested in showing their cars are asked to contact the clerk's office or download a form from the township's Web site.
From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 14 activities will include crafts for all ages which will be sent to the troops, face painting, moonwalk, touch-a-truck, and a free car wash. Food and soft refreshments will be available along with a 50/50 raffle and more.

Workshop on how to submit poetry
The Northwest Cultural Council will host its Second Saturday Poetry workshop, "Getting Published?! A workshop in Submission Preparations," from 9 a.m. to noon June 14.
The workshop will be led by Jackie White, translations editor for RHINO magazine and assistant professor of English and Latino Studies at Lewis University. The class will review the submission process and etiquette, as well as find the best venues to match your poems.

Summer Band and Orchestra sign-up
Registration has begun for the District 54 Summer Band and Orchestra program. Any student who has played at least one year in the District 54 instrumental music program is eligible to enroll. Summer Band and Orchestra will take place July 7-24 (Mondays-Thursdays) at Keller Junior High School, 820 Bode Road, Schaumburg. Registration forms are available from any instrumental music teacher in District 54 or at web54.sd54.k12.il.us/instruct/finearts/instrmusic/summer. Registration deadline is June 19.
