Briefs: A healthy Lake County

The Lake County Health Department scored 95 out of 100 on a requirement of the Centers for Disease Control for public health emergency preparedness. The department has worked with the county clerk's office, townships and municipalities to develop a plan that would utilize local polling places as points of distribution should the need for mass medication arise during a public health emergency. The plan reduces traffic congestion and the need to travel. The public health emergency response plans are reviewed annually as part of a federal grant to assist agencies in delivering medicine and supplies during a large-scale public health emergency, such as a bioterrorism attack. A score of 69 out of 100 is considered satisfactory.
