Arlington Hts. schools host autism workshop

District 214 will host a four-day interactive workshop on Autism, "Understanding and Supporting Students on the Autism Spectrum," 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., July 28 through 31, Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road, Arlington Heights. The program is open to the public at a cost of $125 per day or $400 for all four days. Arrive at 8 a.m. for registration, dressed comfortably and prepared to learn and have fun. Lunch is "on your own."

Participants will gain an experience-based understanding of the characteristics of children on the autism spectrum, including those with Asperger's Syndrome. Many of the best practice strategies currently used to teach and support these students from early childhood through high school will be presented. Small breakout groups will be a part of each presentation to allow application of information to students' various age and performance levels. The workshop will be conducted by consultants Nanette A. Negri, Ph.D., Lisa M. Ladson, B.A., B.C.A.B.A. and Sharon Hammer, M.S.

Focus topics will include:

• Day 1 "Sensitivity Training for Families, Staff and Peers"

• Day 2 "Learning Characteristics, Sensory Support and Movement Differences: A Newer Understanding of the Experience of Autism"

• Day 3 "Decoding the Possible Messages of Challenging Behavior and Discrete Trial Format"

• Day 4 "Visual and Augmentative Communication Systems for all Students on the Spectrum: Comic Strip Conversations & Social Stories and Learning to Play/Playing to Learn."

The registration deadline is June 13. Indicate which workshops will be attended.
