Route 53 is the answer to congestion
I enjoyed the Sunday, May 11, Daily Herald article about the history and accomplishments of the Stratton family of Lake County.
There was one project the family, or more specifically, Governor William G. Stratton, did not accomplish even though he was a major figure in building the Illinois infrastructure that is stretched beyond capacity today. This included building 7000 miles of highways.
He and the governor of Wisconsin promised to build an expressway that would meet at Richmond, Illinois. The Wisconsin governor managed to keep his word. But Gov. Stratton and succeeding governors have failed to keep the promise of extending Route 53 to meet highway 12 in Wisconsin.
Every study I have seen shows Route 53 is the best way in all respects to lessen our traffic jams. Only when Route 53 is extended will Illinois have kept the promise of Gov. Stratton. Then we can have environmentally sound traffic relief and not waste $4 a gallon fuel while idling in traffic and under the stress of unnecessary long commute times.
