Reds' rookie steals thunder from Griffey's 599th homer
Jay Bruce insists that his first career homer won't overshadow Ken Griffey Jr.'s 599th.
Oh, really?
Griffey moved within one homer of a seldom-reached mark on Saturday, but the rookie who's just getting started was the center of attention in the cluster of disbelieving Cincinnati Reds at home plate.
Bruce extended his amazing weeklong debut with his first homer Saturday, a solo shot in the 10th inning that gave the Cincinnati Reds an 8-7 victory over the stunned and frustrated Atlanta Braves.
The first time the 21-year-old rookie went deep, it ended a game that started with Griffey's 599th homer.
"You can't steal the show from him," Bruce said.
That's exactly what he did.
Bruce's homer off Manny Acosta (3-2) dealt another crushing road defeat to the Braves, who couldn't hold a one-run lead in the ninth and couldn't stop Bruce an inning later.
Diamondbacks 4, Nationals 0: Brandon Webb threw his eighth career shutout, Mark Reynolds homered twice, and Arizona snapped a five-game losing streak by beating visiting Washington.
Webb (10-2) scattered 6 singles in his second complete game of the year and 14th of his career. He struck out eight and hit two batters.
Marlins 7, Phillies 3: Ricky Nolasco pitched 6¿ strong innings, and Florida ended host Philadelphia's five-game winning streak.
Luis Gonzalez hit a go-ahead 2-run homer, and Cody Ross and Jorge Cantu also went deep for the upstart Marlins, who moved back into first place in the NL East -- a half-game ahead of the Phillies.
Chase Utley hit his major-league-leading 19th homer for Philadelphia.
Mets 3, Dodgers 2: Carlos Beltran hit a tying homer, and Fernando Tatis singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as host New York edged Los Angeles.
Pirates 14, Cardinals 4: Luis Rivas hit his first career grand slam, and Xavier Nady, and Ronny Paulino drove in 3 runs apiece to lift visiting Pittsburgh over St. Louis.
Brewers 4, Astros 1: Ben Sheets (6-1) got within one out of pitching his third complete game of the season, and Prince Fielder and Russell Branyan homered to lead host Milwaukee past Houston.
Padres 5, Giants 1: Josh Banks pitched a 6-hitter for his first career complete game to lift visiting San Diego over San Francisco for the Padres' fifth win in six games.

Red Sox 6, Orioles 3: Manny Ramirez became the 24th player to reach 500 career home runs, connecting in the seventh inning off Chad Bradford to help visiting Boston beat Baltimore.
Ramirez is also only the seventh player in baseball history with 500 homers, 1,500 RBI, 1,000 walks, 475 doubles and a .300 batting average. The others are Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Mel Ott, Babe Ruth, Frank Thomas and Ted Williams.
Yankees 7, Twins 6 (12): Bobby Abreu gave visiting New York another big hit, breaking a 12th-inning tie with a one-out single to lift the Yankees over Minnesota
Juan Rincon (2-2) gave up singles to Johnny Damon and Derek Jeter before Abreu -- who had 3 hits the night before -- came through with a floater into shallow center field.
Royals 4, Indians 2: David DeJesus homered, and Kyle Davies pitched 5 strong innings just hours after being called up from Class AAA to help host Kansas City end a 12-game slide by beating Cleveland.
Davies (1-0) gave up 1 run on 5 hits as the Royals reigning Cy Young winner C. C. Sabathia (3-7) to end what manager Trey Hillman had been calling "this miserable streak."
Rangers 8, Athletics 4: Josh Hamilton homered and drove in 3 runs, and host Texas finished with a 19-10 in May, the first time they've won 19 games in a month since June 1983.
Hamilton pushed his RBI total to major-league-leading 61 with a 2-run homer in the fifth.
Mariners 5, Tigers 0: Felix Hernandez allowed just 2 hits in 8 innings, and Kenji Johjima stole home during host Seatttle's win over Justin Verlander (2-8) and Detroit.
Angels 3, Blue Jays 2 (10): Maicer Izturis set up the winning run with a bunt single, his fourth hit of the game, and pinch hitter Juan Rivera delivered an RBI single in the 10th to give host Los Angeles the victory over Toronto.
