A golf tournament that is 100 years in the making
So you think you've mastered the Wing Park Golf Club?
Not afraid of the 571-yard, par-5 at Elgin's nine-hole course?
On June 14 and 15, you have a chance to prove it -- and earn bragging rights for the next 100 years.
The Wing Park Centennial Open will be held that weekend at the course designed by Tom Bendelow in 1908.
"The greens are exceptionally small and tricky. They have very subtle ridges and dips," said Dave Buck, clubhouse attendant and the course historian. "It is a complete challenge for the everyday golfer."
The entry fee is $30 and it is open to any amateur golfer.
Golfers will be grouped with entrants with similar scores, so organizers need an old scorecard.
If you haven't played the course, you need to by June 8, which is the deadline to sign up for the tournament.
"If they've played out here and already have an average, they can turn that in," course employee Steve Harper said.
And while club technology has certainly improved since 1908, organizers are asking men and women to dress like it was last century with ties and skirts, respectively.
"We're requesting people to dress in period clothing," said Buck, noting organizers also will roll out some antique cars.
The first- and second-place winners will receive a trophy.
Food also is included with the entry fee.
Proceeds will benefit the Junior Golf Foundation and Sunshine Through Golf, which introduces the game to disabled and handicapped children.
Course officials also will hold a Senior Scramble tournament on June 16 for players 50 and older.
The entry fee is $10 and it's a four-person scramble.
