Cougars fall short
Despite another quality start from Scott Mitchinson, the Kane County Cougars came out on the short end of a 2-1 decision to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers before 5,402 Thursday at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva.
Mitchinson (4-2), who worked 7 innings and allowed 2 hits with 7 strikeouts and no walks, has posted 5 quality starts in his last six appearances. It's the second time he's done it against Rattlers right-hander Phillippe Aumont (3-3), who stymied the Cougars with 5 shutout innings. Keith Meyer worked the ninth for his second save.
Mitchinson gave up an unearned run in the top of the sixth that broke a scoreless tie. Reliever Chad Kerfoot gave up 1 run in the top of the eighth.
The Cougars stranded 10 runners, 9 from the third to seventh innings. They scored in the eighth off reliever Justin Souza when Danny Hamblin singled, Corey Brown doubled and Greg Dowling drove in Souza with a sacrifice fly.
