Seminar can help young readers
A seminar titled "Empowering Struggling Readers of All Ages" will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 9 at the Garden Terrace Banquets, 1000 Wellington Ave., Elk Grove Village. Registration begins at 8 am. The fee is $115 for members of the Illinois Branch of the International Dyslexia Association; $155 for non-members. This includes a box lunch. Forest View chess team takes title
The chess team from District 214's Forest View Alternative School in Arlington Heights took on the previously undefeated team from Cyd Lash School for the Chicago Area Alternative Education League title. The Falcons scored 13.5 to their opponents' 11.5 points. It was the Falcon's first chess title.
The students at FVAS who participated throughout this championship year were Alex Berlow, who ended the year with a record of 33 wins and one loss; Michael Rivera, Shaun Shankman, Andrew Horne, Reuben Cupeles, Sergio Landeros, Tom Dabrowski and Ernesto Castenada.
Heirloom quilt exhibit at museum
Quilted Heirlooms, the Arlington Height Historical Museum's newest exhibition, continues through Aug. 17 at the museum's Heritage Gallery, 112 W. Fremont St. The exhibit showcases quilts and other related items, drawn from the historical society's collection, spanning the last 150 years.

The Music Saves Lives Blood Drive will be held from noon to 6 p.m. June 3 at the American Red Cross Arlington Heights Service Center, 544 W. Northwest Hwy., Arlington Heights.
