Storm stops Wing Park pool pumps
This weather for this weekend looks good for swimming, as long as you're at Lords Park in Elgin.
An electrical storm last weekend damaged seven pumps for the Wing Park Family Aquatic Center.
As a result, the pool at 1030 Wing St. will open June 7 instead of this Saturday.
Greg Bruggeman, Elgin's Parks and Recreation Department aquatics supervisor, said a power outage occurred at a transformer.
That in turn damaged pumps that help circulate water at the Wing Park facility, he said.
Crews discovered the problem Tuesday.
"There's a bunch of theories going around internally," Bruggeman said. "We don't know what happened."
The pumps immediately were sent out for repairs in hopes for opening this weekend, but to no avail.
While the Wing Park pool is down for now, the Lords Park Family Aquatic Center, 325 Hiawatha Drive, will open as scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday.
"Lords Park is ready to go. It's working well. We've got everything balanced," Bruggeman said.
Swimmers also may temporarily use their outdoor pool passes at Adventure Island at The Centre, 100 Symphony Way, until Wing Park's Pool opens.
Outdoor passes normally are accepted only at the Centre if the other two pools are closed for bad weather.
Pool passes for the summer are on sale at the Centre's main desk.
