Utley's 17th helps Phillies top Rockies

Adam Eaton needed one-third of the season to eliminate the goose egg next to his name.

Chase Utley hit his major-league-leading 17th homer to help Eaton earn his first win, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Colorado Rockies 6-1 Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep.

Eaton (1-3) allowed 1 run over 6 innings, Geoff Jenkins hit a 2-run shot and the Phillies (31-24) moved a season-best 7 games above .500 with their first sweep of the season. Philadelphia outscored Colorado 33-10 in the series.

"I was nervous, to be honest with you," said Eaton, who was winless in his first 10 starts. "It was a weird feeling. It was nice to get the first one out of the way the last week of May."

The reeling Rockies are a season-worst 13 games under .500. The defending NL champions, who swept Philadelphia in the division series last October, have been decimated by injuries this season.

Eaton gave up 4 hits and struck out four in his best outing so far, lowering his ERA to 4.99. He also pitched well in his last start, at Houston, but took the loss. Eaton was a bust last season after signing a $24.5 million, three-year deal in free agency. He was 10-10 with a 6.29 ERA and got left off the postseason roster.

"He's been a little more aggressive," manager Charlie Manuel said. "He's stayed out of a big inning. If he can get us to the sixth, seventh inning, he'll be OK."

Rockies rookie Greg Reynolds (0-2) allowed 5 hits, but was hurt by 8 walks. The right-hander gave up 6 runs in 5¿ innings in his fourth career start. Reynolds was the second overall pick in the 2006 amateur draft.

"We were in the game until the two homers," Reynolds said. "It was pretty disappointing they had an inning like that."

After Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino walked to start the bottom of the fifth, Utley drove one into the second deck in right field to give the Phillies a 4-1 lead. Jenkins connected after Ryan Howard walked to make it 6-1.

Utley is on pace to hit 50 homers, 18 more than his career high in 2006. The record for second basemen is 42, set by Rogers Hornsby in 1922 and tied by Davey Johnson in 1973.

Reds 9, Pirates 1: David Ross hit his first homer of the season to put the finishing touch on a 6-run first inning off Tom Gorzelanny, and host Cincinnati extended its home winning streak to nine games.

Ross drove in 4 runs overall, and rookie Jay Bruce had a double and a pair of walks as the Reds extended their best home winning streak since 1980.

Gorzelanny (4-5) retired only two of the eight batters he faced during the shortest of his 54 starts in the majors.

Brewers 1, Braves 0: Milwaukee's Rickie Weeks delivered a run-scoring triple in the eighth inning to make a winner of Jeff Suppan, who baffled visiting Atlanta over eight innings.

Braves starter Jo-Jo Reyes (2-3) had given up just 2 hits and retired 14 batters in a row before walking J.J. Hardy on 4 pitches leading off the eighth.

Suppan (3-4) allowed all 4 hits in a season-high 8 innings. He also had a season-high 7 strikeouts.

Cardinals 6, Astros 1: Adam Wainwright shackled visiting Houston for 8 innings, and Yadier Molina had 2 hits and 2 RBI to help spoil Wandy Rodriguez's first start in more than a month.

Cesar Izturis added a 2-run triple for the Cardinals, who are 7-3 in their last 10 games against the Astros.

Wainwright (5-2) matched his career high with eight strikeouts, allowing 3 hits.

Ty Wigginton homered into the third deck in left in the third for the Astros.

Mets 7, Marlins 6 (12): Fernando Tatis delivered a 2-run double in the bottom of the 12th innings to give New York the win voer visiting Florida.

The Mets made it 5-5 in the ninth when Endy Chavez connected for the first pinch-hit home run of his career.
