Rabid bat found in Naperville

A rabid bat has been found in the yard of a Naperville home, Will County Health Department officials said.

The bat, discovered Tuesday along Crimson Court in south Naperville, is the county's first confirmed case of animal rabies during 2008, officials said.

No humans were exposed, officials said Wednesday. A dog at the home is current on its rabies vaccines but did not come in contact with the bat.

The case of rabies was confirmed by an Illinois Department of Public Health laboratory.

The city is asking concerned residents to visit the Will County Health Department Web site at www.willcountyhealth.org or to contact the Illinois Department of Public Health at (217) 782-4977 or www.idph.state.il.us.

Residents are encouraged to notify authorities if they find bats on the ground so the animal can be tested for the disease.
