Briefs: Teachers earn grants

Four teachers at Kane County schools earned more than $50,000 in grants and scholarships from BP's A+ for Energy program. The teachers were selected for creative classroom, after-school, extracurricular or summer activities involving energy education and conservation. Winners are Clay Sewell, Illinois Math and Science Academy, Aurora; Elizabeth Woods, Dundee-Crown High School, Carpentersville; Joseph Kirkpatrick, St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School, Hampshire; and Claire Ahs, Glenwood School for Boys and Girls, St. Charles. BP also will provide winning teachers with scholarships to attend a three-day energy training conference and will honor them June 18 during a ceremony at the Symphony Center in Chicago.

Violence counseling offered

The Community Crisis Center in Elgin is now providing domestic violence counseling services for northwestern Kane County. Counseling is provided by a licensed professional counselor and is available to adult and adolescent females. All of the domestic violence services are at no cost to victims. St. Peter Catholic School in Geneva is accepting applications for new students for the 2008-2009 school year. Registration forms are available in the school office, 1881 Kaneville Road. Bring a copy of the student's birth and baptismal certificates. Call (630) 232-0476.

Eco poster contest

Tell people how to save the environment in a Geneva poster contest for children in grades kindergarten through 12. All artwork must be on an 11- by 14-inch white poster board. The top 20 entries will be displayed at the Swedish Days Green Geneva -- An Eco-Fun Expo in June and a goodie basket will be awarded to three entrants. To register: Write your name, address, phone number, age and grade as of Saturday. Drop it off at the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, 8 S. Third St., by 4:30 p.m. June 6.

Festival volunteers sought

Sell crafts at festival

Booth space for crafters (except jewelry and doll clothes) at the Swedish Days Craft Show June 17 to 19 is available. The juried show features crafts in several mediums. Register for Freedom Run

The Greater St. Charles Education Foundation will have its second annual Great Western Freedom 4 competitive run at 8 a.m. July 4. The race starts at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve along Dean Street, just west of Randall Road, and follows the Great Western Trail. Advance registration can be done online at www.signmeup.com or in person at Dick Pond Athletics, 303 N. Second St., for $20. On-site registration the day of the event is $25. A $2 discount is offered to members of the Chicago Area Runners Association and the Fox River Trail Runners. Proceeds benefit programs at St. Charles Unit District 303.
