Briefs: Off-duty cop puts out fire
An off-duty Hoffman Estates police officer is being credited with helping put out an apartment fire over the weekend. Police said about 1:40 a.m. Sunday, officer Debbie Whited heard a smoke alarm going off in a nearby apartment on the 2500 block of Boardwalk Boulevard. When she got there, police said Whited helped the unit's tenant and her children escape. The off-duty officer then took a fire extinguisher from the apartment building's common area, went back inside the unit and put out the fire, which had started in a bathroom ceiling fan. The fire department made sure the blaze was fully extinguished, and no injuries were reported. Whited is a 19-year veteran of the Hoffman Estates Police Department, currently assigned to the DARE anti-drug program.
