ESO celebrates first commercial record

Tuesday was a day of celebration for the Elgin Symphony Orchestra; the first commercial recording in its 57-year history was released on Naxos, the world's top-selling classical music label.

The recording, part of Naxos' "American Classics" series, features music by Aaron Copland (1900-90), Included are Copland's "Old American Songs" in their arrangements for chorus, featuring the St. Charles Singers. The CD, conducted by music director Robert Hanson, also includes Copland's 1920s jazz-influenced "Piano Concerto" and a concert suite Copland derived from his own opera, "The Tender Land."

The CD is available at Barnes & Noble and other retailers featuring classical recordings, as well as from such online retailers as Amazon.com. The recording also will be sold as a digital download from Amazon.com, iTunes and Naxos' own Web Radio and Music Library, available through naxos.com
