ECC exits World Series

The Elgin Community College baseball team lost to Monroe 10-8 Tuesday and was eliminated from the NJCAA World Series in Millington, Tenn.

The game had been suspended Monday night due to rain with ECC trailing 10-8 in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Spartans couldn't rally on Tuesday and came home with a fifth-place finish in their fifth straight trip to the World Series.

"We just couldn't get a shutout inning," said Spartans coach Bill Angelo of the loss to Monroe. "But our guys fought hard and gave it everything they had. They played their hearts out."

Bryan Mason was 3-for-5 with 3 RBI for the Spartans while Greg Stolzenburg also had 2 RBI.

Rob Quick suffered the loss on the mound in relief of Jim Van Syckle.

The Spartans finished the season 32-16 and 1-2 in the World Series. They won their first game before losing a 14-12 slugfest to LSU-Eunice to drop into the consolation bracket.

"LSU was a pretty darn good team and Monroe was solid," said Angelo. "We thought we had a chance to win both those games it just didn't work out for us."
